I am cellist and think of the A in the same terms as you do the E...I am here because I am now a student of the viola...I've heard most of the jokes thank you. I do not have a roadie\camera crew as Yo-Yo Ma does and carry the above up a mountain as I intend to use the viola for composition in an outdoor setting.

The portato marking doesnt always mean portato - it usually means half-stacatto. How to tell the difference: portato nearly always uses a slur.

But too much vibrato is bad... because you don't know where the note actually is... also a cheap parlor trick.

When I play guitar, I generally play the bass part with thumb, the strumming part with my first and/or second fingers, and melody with the rest. All at once. With lots of exceptions, ie strumming with pinky, drumming with thumb etc. I was unable to do the same while bowing my arpeggione, and my violas, and it looks as if I was right. It can't be done. Easily. Yet. I'll be back.

It's interesting that you can actually take this technique a step further (particularly on the G string) and with the bow placed further down the fingerboard. You can almost create an electric guitar type "billow"!!!

I searched for "Cello techniques" to get a hum of what sounds a cello can make and got just what I needed. If I search on "Acoustic guitar techniques" I just get mumbo jumbo. I am so glad that this instrument is not as mainstream, but still just as well known.

The violin outfit is a beautiful set and I just purchased it recently. Though I am a beginner, the bow in the video is not the one supplied with the outfit and looks to be a Hoyer or the Hidersine 5065 bow (but I could be mistaken). This bow is significantly more expensive than the Hidersine brazilwood and I think it had an influence on making the violin tone much richer and more resonant in the audio. Of course, this could also be due to the violinist's ability. But I know a premium bow makes a whole lot of difference to make the violin sound good overall. I appreciate the audio demo, but the review is somewhat misleading
